Program History

The Green Business Certification Program responds to interest in the business community and the County Government in establishing Montgomery County, Maryland as a leader in environmental stewardship. It reflects the County’s environmental priorities and links to the County’s numerous environmental programs and financial incentives.  

The program is modeled after the successful Bay Area Green Business Program in California which has been operating for over a decade.  It also draws on Santa Monica’s Green Business Certification Program, the Sacramento Sustainable Business Program, and Sarasota’s Green Business Partnership.
