Hughes transitioned to eco-friendly practices several years ago. Below are some highlights of our programs:
Recycling: Recycling stations are set up throughout our facilities to collect county-required paper, cardboard, metals, and comingled materials. We recycle a long list of voluntary materials such as wood pallets, electronics, carpet, plastic parts, and shipping materials. Each year, we have a facility-wide cleanup campaign. The county calculates our statistics for recycling compared to regular waste sent to the landfill each year, resulting in recycling rates for Hughes that are well over 60% annually We have achieved this goal over the last 5 years and are recognized by Montgomery County’s Division of Solid Waste Services as a Continued Excellence in Recycling business.
Energy Management: Hughes facilities are a mix of office, engineering lab, and data center space. Key focus is given to efforts that allow us to reduce our consumption of electricity and still provide our customers with quality service. Over the past 3 years, Hughes has partnered with energy consultants to improve the operation of our mechanical systems, data center air flow management, and participation in curtailment programs that reduce load from the local utility grid. Overall, Hughes has experienced a 10% to 12% reduction in electrical costs.
Renovations: Hughes has incorporated sustainable materials and practices as part of our ongoing building renovations. We have taken advantage of Pepco’s rebate program by upgrading our lighting systems and mechanical systems. Our carpet has been replaced with CRI Green Label Plus. Old carpet is disposed of by taking it to a recycle center in lieu of the local landfill. Restrooms have been renovated with low flow fixtures and auto-sensor faucets to conserve water. All pantries have been equipped with separate filtered water systems to reduce the use of bottled water. New furniture is GREENGUARD certified for low-emitting materials and end-of-life recycling/reuse.
Services: Our service vendors for janitorial, landscaping, and pest control are green certified. We conduct annual air and water quality testing to ensure the indoor environment is comfortable and safe for all of our employees.
Hughes employs an on-site occupational nurse to assist employees with preventive medication such as flu shots, health screenings including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and assistance with healthy lifestyle choices.
Hughes participates in the county’s Adopt a Road campaign, by employees volunteering their time to clean up Observation Blvd. during lunch time.
A green committee has been formed to spread awareness of Hughes’ green initiatives, suggestions on ways to green their lives both at work and at home, and provide a way for employees to communicate their ideas and recommendations so that Hughes can continue to improve its environmental efforts.
